Florida politician makes case for gun reform

Val Demings, who is running to represent Central Florida in Congress, used her time on stage at the Democratic National Comvention Tuesday night to talk about the need for gun reform in the wake of a shooting at a popular LGBT nightclub in Orlando.

“Our state takes it personally that our Congress refuses to disarm haters,” said Demings, the first woman to serve as chief of the Orlando Police Department. She held the position from 2007 to 2011.

The day after the mass shooting at Pulse nightclub, U.S. Sen. Bob Casey of Pennsylvania proposed legislation that would prohibit people from purchasing a gun if they have been convicted of a misdemeanor hate crime.

The shooting in Orlando killed 49 people, many of whom had Puerto Rican roots.
